Learning to Speak Documentary Screening
This presentation consists of introductory remarks by Dr. Shapiro, followed by a 50-minute screening of "Learning to Speak," and then discussion with the audience members, Ms. Beck, and Dr. Shapiro. In the film, Ms. Beck provides candid insights on how years of difficult familial relationships led her to feelings of isolation and depression that resulted in self-harm and attempts to take her life. She details how initial forms of treatment that relied heavily on medications failed her and how a psychoanalytic approach enabled her to assume authority for her life and regain a voice that had previously been silenced.
