Understanding and Treating Patients with Pathological Narcissism

The course will focus on pathological narcissism, including narcissistic personality disorder, and it will review the history of the concept and psychoanalytic theories of pathological narcissism. Integrating theory, clinical experience, and empirical evidence, the course will discuss different manifestations of pathological narcissism, effects of narcissism on co-morbid conditions as well as developmental factors, longitudinal course, and psychological mechanisms. The course will describe typical challenges in treatments and relational dynamics of stalemates as well as effective strategies to address those. The course will review principles of treatment for pathological narcissism, including vulnerable and covert manifestations, as well as modifications of treatment at the advanced stages of treatment. The participants will also learn about risk factors, dynamics, unique characteristics, and interventions for suicidality and psychopathy in patients with pathological narcissism.

Igor Weinberg, Ph.D.
Igor Weinberg, Ph.D., is a post-seminar adult candidate member of BPSI and an ATP graduate; he is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Psychologist at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Weinberg published seminal articles on narcissistic personality disorder and its treatment. His book "Pathological Narcissism: A Principles Based Approach" is getting published later this year. He maintains private practice in Belmont, MA.

Any program participant requesting their individual program registration be canceled, must submit their request in writing via email to Jackson Doty at jdoty@bpsi.org. For fee-based events, a request for cancellation (and refund using the original form of payment) must be received no later than 48 hours in advance of the event. Requests received later than 48 hours prior to the event will not be processed or accepted. All approved refunds are subject to a $10.00 administrative fee. If BPSI cancels an event, all registrants will receive a full refund of fees paid (no administration charge) no later than two business days following the scheduled date of the event, using the original form of payment.
