Adult Development: Growth in Theory, in the Consulting Room, and in the Historical Moment

This 5-session course aims to provide a concise introduction to theories of growth and change over the adult life span, along with a chance to explore selected examples of growth. Our focus will be on the period from adolescence to late adulthood, and will include work by Erik Erikson (the widening social radius), Carol Gilligan (women’s growth in connection), the Boston Change Process Study Group (micro-process of change in therapy and analysis), and Usha Tummala-Narra (decolonizing psychoanalysis). Clinical material will be used to explore and challenge the theories we study. We will read a new graphic novel illustrating a Korean-American teen's coming of age story (Deborah J.J. Lee's In Limbo) and will explore historical examples of identity and generativity in the midst of social crises (poet Allen Ginsberg's use of a psychiatric hospitalization in his 20s, Mohandas Gandhi's effort to transform the British Empire in his 50's). Throughout, we will critically consider William James’s claim that character is set in plaster by age 30.
