This course will provide an 8-session introduction to growth and transformation over the adult life span. Together we will explore psychoanalytic theories of development in adulthood, starting with emerging adulthood and extending to late life; we will consider individuals in the context of their social surround. Presentations and discussions will address the central topics of gender, culture, and wisdom, as well as race (decolonizing psychoanalytic thinking) as they pertain to adults inside and outside the consulting room. We will also discuss clinical, literary, and biographical-historical examples of women and men, including Mohandas Gandhi, who were able to grow as individuals while also experiencing and/or leading social change. Readings include articles by Erik Erikson, Michael Rutter, Carol Gilligan, James Baldwin, Paul Baltes, and Usha Tummala-Narra. Throughout, we will address Erikson's probing question, "What, really is an adult?" Emphasis will be placed on group discussion and respect across differences.
